UAE and Japan Explore New Opportunities in AI and Advanced Industrial Technology

A UAE delegation travelled to Tokyo and Kyoto to explore stronger industrial ties, wider AI adoption and ways to apply scientific research to real-world manufacturing.

The UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) has completed a working visit to Japan aimed at deepening cooperation in advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and industrial innovation.

The visit included meetings in Tokyo and Kyoto, where officials and representatives from the public and private sectors explored ways to translate technological progress and scientific research into practical industrial applications.

Hasan Jasem Al Nowais, MoIAT’s Undersecretary, headed the UAE delegation and attended the UAE–Japan Technology and AI Roundtable in Tokyo, as well as the 23rd Ministerial Roundtable of the Science and Technology in Society Forum in Kyoto.

The discussions centred on improving industrial productivity, strengthening technological capabilities and identifying opportunities for businesses and research institutions in both countries to work more closely together.

AI and Automation at the Centre of Industrial Cooperation

Talks in Tokyo focused on strengthening industrial partnerships and encouraging faster integration of emerging technologies into manufacturing.

Key areas included artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, digital manufacturing and precision engineering. Greater use of these technologies could help manufacturers improve product quality, boost operational efficiency and move towards more sustainable production practices.

Participants also explored ways to strengthen collaboration between technology firms and industrial businesses to create solutions tailored to specific manufacturing needs.

Connecting Scientific Research with Manufacturing

In Kyoto, the discussions examined how academic research and scientific developments could be translated into practical industrial applications.

Bringing researchers and manufacturers closer together can help businesses identify technologies that address real production challenges and support the development of commercially useful solutions.

The UAE's industrial ecosystem offers opportunities to test and expand promising technologies through pilot projects and wider implementationThe UAE’s global partnerships and Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) also help manufacturers explore international markets and expand their overseas business opportunities.

Factory Forward UAE to Support Industry Adoption

MoIAT highlighted its Factory Forward UAE programme as a key initiative for linking technology providers with manufacturers and promoting the implementation of advanced industrial technologies.

The initiative can help create opportunities for businesses to test technologies, assess their value and explore broader implementation across industrial operations.

Al Nowais stressed the need for closer collaboration between technology firms and UAE manufacturers. Possible areas of cooperation include AI-based quality checks, predictive maintenance, employee training and efforts to expand the use of advanced technologies across the industrial sector.

Such collaborations can help manufacturers identify equipment issues earlier, improve quality-control processes and make better use of operational data.

Long-Standing UAE–Japan Economic Partnership

Al Nowais described the UAE and Japan as long-standing economic partners with considerable potential to strengthen ties in the industrial and technology sectors. He also pointed to opportunities for both countries to share knowledge, promote innovation and boost industrial competitiveness through closer business collaboration.

The latest discussions reflect the UAE's broader efforts to strengthen its industrial base and increase the use of advanced technologies in manufacturing. Stronger ties with Japanese businesses, research organisations and technology experts could help advance these goals by converting scientific breakthroughs into practical applications for industry.

As the UAE and Japan seek to expand their cooperation, collaboration among manufacturers, researchers and technology firms will remain vital to driving industrial innovation.
