Ajman and Sri Lanka Explore New Avenues for Trade and Investment

Discussions aim to strengthen trade relations, encourage joint ventures and identify new prospects across key economic sectors.

Ajman is looking to expand its international business connections following discussions between Ajman Chamber and Sri Lanka's diplomatic representatives on opportunities for closer economic cooperation.

The meeting brought together Salem Al Suwaidi, Director-General of Ajman Chamber, and Alexi Gunasekera, Sri Lanka's Consul General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Their discussions centred on improving commercial relations, encouraging joint investments and creating stronger links between businesses in both markets.

The discussions extended across multiple industries, including fintech, industrial equipment, education, food security and modern information technology, with both sides considering ways to develop business partnerships and encourage cross-border investment.

Ajman Highlights Its Business and Investment Potential

During the meeting, Ajman Chamber presented the emirate's investment advantages, highlighting its diverse economic sectors and business-friendly environment. The discussions reflected an effort to introduce international partners to opportunities available in Ajman and encourage greater participation from overseas companies.

Stronger business relations between Ajman and Sri Lanka could create fresh opportunities for trade, broaden commercial connections and encourage partnerships between companies in both markets. However, no specific investment agreement or confirmed deal was announced following the meeting.

The two sides also considered the possibility of signing memoranda of understanding to provide a framework for future cooperation. Such agreements could help establish priorities for joint initiatives and strengthen long-term commercial relationships.

Expo Sri Lanka 2027 Opens Another Channel for Cooperation

Sri Lanka's delegation invited Ajman Chamber to participate in Expo Sri Lanka 2027, scheduled for January next year. The exhibition will feature several key sectors, such as industrial production, agricultural services, clean energy, travel, healthcare and innovative technology.

Participation could give businesses from Ajman an opportunity to explore the Sri Lankan market, connect with potential partners and learn more about investment prospects in the country.

Ajman Chamber extended an invitation to the Sri Lankan delegation to attend the unveiling of the Thara Investment and Entrepreneurship Ecosystem. The initiative is designed to nurture startups, support business growth and bring entrepreneurs and investors together to explore potential ventures.

What This Could Mean for Ajman's Investment Landscape

Ajman's efforts to build relationships with overseas markets form part of a broader approach to attracting investment and diversifying economic activity. Stronger international business links can help companies identify new markets, develop partnerships and explore opportunities beyond their domestic operations.

For the emirate's wider investment environment, cooperation across technology, industry, education and food security could contribute to business expansion and economic diversification. These sectors may also create indirect opportunities for commercial property demand if new businesses establish operations or expand their local presence, although no such property-related commitments were announced at the meeting.

The discussions with Sri Lanka therefore represent an opportunity to develop future commercial relationships rather than confirmation of new investments. The next steps will depend on whether the proposed cooperation leads to formal agreements, business initiatives or investment commitments.
